Too early to decorate for the holiday's, Jan refers to it as a transitional time..

We cleared her summer arrangement of vellum books and replaced them with

rich red antique Books for the fall and Thanksgiving.

The summer look..

Red books for some rich red punch.

Then she added some magnolia from the yard and some miniature pears and walnuts.

The Master has struck again!

I was amazed at how timeless it is. This could

easily grace the pages of Elle Decor today.

and the studio we finally realized the only way it was going to be effective

As much as I love a beautiful bare dining room table,
there is something so intimate and warm
about a table draped in beautiful linens.
It seems to add a touch of elegance but at the same time a nice casualness.

What better way to say fall than leaves.

We had friends to dinner last night and with this 70 degree weather,

I felt like I needed a little fall to cozy us up.

So, I went to the backyard and cut some of the branches off our

gorgeous maple trees.

voila....

And, I redid the pumpkin arrangement with some more pastel colors.....

It is interior designer David Netto's downtown fifth avenue place

and it has always just drove me wild.

Such a great juxtaposition of new modern and antique.

PUMPKINS...

Well, we thought it was pumpkin time

but as Charlottesville is going to be in the mid to upper 70's

the next few days... we decided to bring the pumpkins inside

and create a little fall within....

There are so many different variety of pumpkin these days it is so

fun to mix and match!

MAO'S LAST DANCER

Temple Fennell, a Charlottesville resident, CEO of ATO Pictures (aka Art Takes Over) and good friend is distributing Mao's Last Dancer at the Vinegar Hill Theater.

Mao's Last Dancer is based on the autobiography of Li Cunxin, who grew up poor in rural China and became a world-famous ballet dancer. The film was directed by Bruce Beresford, the Academy Award winning director of Driving Miss Daisy, Breaker Morant and Tender Mercies.

BRAISED BEEF CHUCK ROAST WITH ROOT VEGETABLES

This morning I woke up and was inspired to cook my first braised meat of the fall.

With the temperature cooling, the leaves falling and after a very busy Friday and Saturday

I popped in a chuck roast that I had bought at the Organic Butcher.

My plan was to take it to a friend who had been moving all day but instead they

came to us as well as some other good friends.

We sat around for a very impromptu dinner

and watched football. There is nothing better than a roast or chicken that you can throw in the oven and walk away from all day.

These are my favorite kind of meals because they are so tasty,

really healthy and they just always leave you satisfied.

Meanwhile, your total prep time is no more than 20 minutes.

Recipe:

chuck roast half pound per person is the rule of thumb

you always want to get extra because it is better the next day

root vegetables any of your favorite, in season

I used potatoe, yam, turnip, beet and carrot

chopped the same size

onion

pint of stock

salt and pepper

thyme

salt and pepper your chuck. make sure you always let your meat sit out at room temperature

before you cook.

heat a few tablespoons of oil in a dutch oven

once hot sear the meat a couple of minutes on each side.

add stock ( i like chicken stock best)

and chopped vegetables and onion

add salt pepper and thyme

bring to boil then cover and put in oven at low temp until meat breaks up with a fork.

at least 4 hours

the longer the better!

Finally!

It feels like fall.

So we scavengered the yard and added some

grocery store roses and made a couple of arrangements.

A good friend gave me this woodstump for my birthday last year.

One of my very favorite things... makes a great center piece.

There is nothing more beautiful than what you find in nature.

Don't discount this time of year.

You will be amazed at how many beautiful things are

still in your yards.

Just look.

FOUR TABLES IN ONE..

And George has the coolest table at the moment.

It is a reproduction Swedish painted formal dining table that is made up of two demilunes and a drop leaf. Together they make a 112"l x 44.5"w x 30"h beautiful formal table.

Seperate them and you have a great drop leaf and two demilunes or a 36" round table.

It is like an instant dining room when you push the demilunes against the wall and just use the dropleaf day to day.

We are crazy for the versatility.

Most people can count on one hand the number of times a year they actually

use their dining room table.

I actually find it a little depressing to have to walk by a huge empty table in a beautiful room.

We love fiddle fig trees. They give rooms a great splash of life and add an architectural element.

Many of our favorite designers use them as standard fare...

and george

If you're new to Ficus... the "Fiddle-leaf fig" is a good beginners Ficus. They are one of the easiest Ficus to grow. Their large leaves collect a lot of light... they can be placed in an area where you can't use a small leaved Ficus. For optimum growth place your plant in direct sunshine or bright filtered light... although they can live in less light. Check for water weekly allowing the soil to dry an inch or two down from the surface. Water thoroughly with tepid water. Don't allow your plant to sit in a saucer of water. Feed monthly while your plant is growing... bi-monthly when it's not.

A friend just asked what she should do for her daughter's birthday.

There was never any question what we would do for Ruby's 4th...

she wanted a "Princess Party".

And anyone who knows Ruby knows she likes it "fancy".

So, we rented a 12' table and cleared the living room.

Got out the china, set the table (with place cards of course)

served mint tea, cucumber sandwiches, edamame and

strawberries (all Ruby's favorites). Jannie made one of

her famous cakes, and a party was had by all. Quite civilized at that!
